Refurbishment works for Winstanley College, Wigan.
Aspire Construction was appointed to lead this complex project, which required careful planning and execution to ensure minimal disruption to the college’s day-to-day activities.
Project Introduction.
Located in Wigan, UK, Winstanley College is renowned for its commitment to providing high-quality education.
As part of its ongoing estate management and curriculum development initiatives, the college made plans for an internal refurbishment and remodelling scheme within its Music and Media Department, located in D Block.
Project Brief.
Aspire Construction was tasked with the complete internal remodelling of the ground and first floors of the Music/Media Department.
The primary goal was to create two hybrid classrooms and a cutting-edge editing suite. The project required a blend of technical expertise and careful scheduling, as the college remained fully operational throughout the works.
Our experience in managing projects within occupied educational buildings was critical in ensuring the safety and well-being of staff and students.
Development.
One of the key challenges Aspire Construction faced was infilling an existing atrium to form a new classroom space. This involved extensive out-of-hours work, starting with the use of a Brokk machine to break out the existing slab. We then constructed a new independent raft foundation and installed a steel mezzanine structure with a metal deck and concrete slab to form the first-floor atrium infill.
In addition to structural works, our team carried out a comprehensive range of interior upgrades. These included M&E upgrades, installation of new stud walls and ceilings, the addition of new fire-rated curtain walling externally, and the installation of doors and windows. Decoration, flooring, and furniture fixtures and equipment (FFE) were also completed to enhance the functionality and aesthetics of the space. For the new editing suite, we used double-skin sound block boards, acoustic baffles, and specially designed doors to achieve full soundproofing, ensuring an optimal environment for media editing.
A significant logistical challenge was the requirement to perform noisy works outside of regular hours to avoid disrupting ongoing lessons. Our team expertly managed the site’s segregation and safety measures, ensuring minimal disruption to the college’s operations while maintaining a safe environment for all building users.
Outcome.
Aspire Construction successfully delivered a state-of-the-art Music/Media Department, featuring two hybrid classrooms and a fully soundproofed editing suite.
Despite the challenges of working in an occupied, active educational facility, Aspire Construction’s dedication to meticulous planning and clear communication ensured the project was completed on time and within budget.
