Project Introduction.

Kingsway Park High School in Rochdale underwent major construction works in 2013 to construct a new school building. The purpose built three storey building transformed the Turf Hill Road site, providing new teaching facilities. Creating a new state of the art building for the ever-growing school population.

Aspire Construction were recently employed by a leading Tier One, engineering, and fit-out Contractor to assist them with the scheme at the school by providing civils and groundworks services for the build of an additional three storey teaching block.

Project Brief.

The school required an upgrade to the existing teaching spaces to deliver enhanced education provision to students.

Having appointed Aspire Construction on previous projects, the main contractor knew they could rely on our expertise and quality of works.

The civils and groundworks pakage would include site setup, reinforced concrete ring beams, drainage, the installation of multiple service trenches and new substation , the construction of a playground including the hard landscaping, and a 5 metre deep  sewer connection to the existing road.

All works were to be completed over a 48 week period, with critical works within the existing school completed during school holidays to ensure minimal disruption to the daily operation of the school.

Development.

Aspire Construction collaborated with the main contractor’s site team in the planning and delivery of the scheme, ensuring that communication levels were maintained throughout.

Our works began with the site set up including the compound and temporary contractor parking. We then carried out a reduced level dig to remove any contaminated ground or sub-standard material and provide a suitable formation for construction to begin. We also installed a piling mat; to provide a stable working platform in line with the structural engineer’s temporary work design, on which the large CFA piling rig could safely move around the site.

The excavation, fabrication and installation of concrete reinforced ring beams was carried out along with the installation of reinforced concrete slab.

External and internal drainage was installed ,including a large 170 cubic meter attenuation tank and with flow control in line with the drainage strategy to manage on site water storage and prolonged release into the existing drainage system.

We installed services trenches to facilitate the installation of underground infrastructure and utilities such as gas and water and upgraded High voltage supply, along with the construction of a new purpose built substation.

For the external areas we provided construction services for the playground and external hard landscaping area, which included concrete kerbs, edgings, formation of steps and several hundred meters of channel drainage.

One of the more complex aspects of this project was the installation of 70 linear metres of new foul drain within an existing road  culminating  with a 5 metre deep sewer connection, whilst ensuring access was maintained for local residents. This work was carried out in compliance with the local authority legislation and in line with united utilities competent contactors approval.

Outcome.

Having worked for the main contractor on previous schemes, they were aware of our industry experience and comprehensive understanding of their specific requirements. This enabled us to plan effectively and avoid any disruption to the build or the existing live site.

Extreme cold weather conditions caused delays to the early programme. We were unable to pour concrete for the foundations, however, the steel erection couldn’t be delayed so we increased the labour resources to accelerate the works, ensuring that critical programme dates were met.

The client benefited from our proactive and collaborative approach to the works. Two-way communication between ourselves and the main contractor’s site team was key on such a compact site.
